Life changing music-making for adults with learning difficulties
Living with a learning disability should not stop anyone from leading an active and enjoyable life, and from being supported to get out and about in their local community.
This summer Mytime Active’s award-winning music programme ArtsTrain teamed up with colleagues in our LeisureCare team to develop an exciting new programme of music for adults with learning disabilities.
Bromley’s estimated population of adults aged 18-64 with a mild, moderate or severe learning disability is 4,728. This is predicted to increase by 5% over the next 2 years until 2020.
For many adults with learning disabilities, communicating with others can be difficult and lead to frustration. Our music programme provided 25 participants with a creative outlet to express how they are feeling, socialise and build independence.
“Chantelle has very reduced communication skills, she has to sign a lot of the time to communicate. She can also get frustrated and finds it difficult to engage in activities. This music project bridged all these barriers to her participation”- Chantelle’s carer
The sessions are run by our team of professional music leaders and create fun and sociable opportunities to play a range of instruments, sing, write and create music. Each session incorporates musical games, songs and provide plenty of opportunities for groups to play and sing collectively as a group.
“The ArtsTrain music project has been incredible! It’s an activity where they all sit together, integrate together as a group and yet they can still be individuals and express their own personalities”- Andrew, Mytime Active Volunteer

Following this pilot project funded by Arts Council England, we have seen the positive impact music-making can have on the lives of adults with learning disabilities. We're seeking funding to support the continuation of this work in 2019.
