Top tips for weatherproofing your golf game

When the winter months arrive and the days get shorter, it can be hard to squeeze in a round of golf. Factor in rain, wind and freezing temperatures and it becomes even more challenging, but there are things you can do to take weather out of the equation.

Tristan Hodgkinson, Head Golf Instructor at Bromley Golf Centre, has given us his top tips for beating the weather and getting your rounds in this winter.

  1. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
Use thin layers, not bulky clothing. If you’re caught by a downpour on your round then the bulkier your clothing is, the more it soaks up and the longer it takes to dry, and worst of all it will seriously affect your swing. So, opting for thinner layers will help, you’ll still be able to keep warm, they’ll dry out quicker, plus it’s much easier to carry a spare in your bag in case you decide to change the top layer part way round.

  2. Invest in good waterproofs that are also windproof.
A crucial part of weatherproofing your game is selecting the right waterproofs, choosing something that is lightweight and windproof will have the smallest impact on your swing.

  3. Winter mitts to keep your hands warm between shots.
You’ll definitely want to make sure you have a toasty pair of golf gloves or mitts to keep your hands warm between shots.

  4. Waterproof golf shoes and warm socks are a must have.
This one seems obvious but there’s nothing worse than soggy socks on the golf course. If you haven’t already then look into a pair of waterproof shoes and thick socks (maybe even bring a spare pair).

  5. A small, lightweight golf bag to carry a few clubs if there’s a trolley ban.
If the weather has been particularly bad, there could be a temporary ban on trolleys to preserve the course. Select a smaller range of clubs and pop them in a light bag to make managing them easier. This could be a good opportunity to fine tune your game with certain clubs!

Hopefully these tips will help you to beat the weather and still make it to your local Mytime Active golf course this winter.
